TRAILER PARK: ANT-MAN

http://moviepilot.com

After a frustratingly small teaser for the teaser trailer, and a teaser trailer that didn’t really show us anything, the Ant-Man trailer has finally arrived, premiering Tuesday night after the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff, Agent Carter.

The trailer is pretty light on action, but we do finally get to see Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, suited up in his Ant-Man costume, shrinking down to size and riding around on a flying ant. Michael Douglas plays Lang’s mentor, Hank Pym, the inventor of the technology Ant-Man uses, and the original Ant-Man – at least in the comics.

“Is it too late to change the name?” asks Lang. There’s no doubt Rudd will be poking holes in the source material and providing some comedy, but Douglas gives us plenty of fine voice-over work, and it looks like Ant-Man will have some heart with Pym giving Lang a chance to be the hero Lang's daughter thinks he is.

Speaking of daughters, Evangeline Lily will be playing Pym’s daughter, Hope – the obvious love interest. Corey Stoll also appears briefly, but not as Yellowjacket – Ant Man’s foe, so I’m looking forward to seeing how he’s portrayed.

Overall, it’s a pretty decent trailer, but the project has been gestating for a long time and gone through some high profile turbulence with Peyton Reed taking over for Edgar Wright as director. Plus, Marvel has done the superhero origins story quite a few times by now, so Ant-Man is definitely at risk of being very predictable. If we’re lucky, Ant-Man will be as funny and fun as last summer’s Guardians of the Galaxy, or at least set us up for some big events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but this first (proper) look isn’t giving us any evidence of either.

Ant-Man premiers July 17, 2015.
